Assessment

Answer the question..."What should I do with my legacy systems?

Customers constantly ask us this question. They're barraged by new business needs, pressure to reduce operations costs, and fear, uncertainty and doubt about the platform and applications that they own.  They want to know what lies under the covers of their systems and are looking for an external party to evaluated them.

The Legacy System Technical Assessment helps customers understand the quality, extensibility and maintainability of a given system.  Our team utilizes a number of analysis tools along with manual inspection to determine aspects such as modularity, complexity, compliance with architectural standards, etc. These types of assessments typically take 2-10 days depending on the size of the application. The Migration Assessment evaluates a given application / system to provide guidance about migrations options and costs. We evaluate the technology stack of the application, the quality of the design, and interview the development and support team members to get a solid understanding of the systems. Further we use a number of tools to get a measure of size and complexity. Finally, we use this information to determine what target languages and platforms the application can be migrated to. In addition, we provide a spectrum of options and cost estimates along with their associated risks. These types of assessments typically take 2-10 days depending on the size of the application.

The Application Portfolio Assessment provides the initial research and data to build an application portfolio view of an enterprise. The assessments gathers data from the following:

  • Finance - we gather as much data as a company has on how money is spent on applications.  What were the initial development costs, the ongoing support costs, etc.
  • Organization - we evaluate the skills and capabilities of your organization. We also evaluate labor costs, demographics, etc. to identify risks and to baseline against other similar organizations.
  • Business Alignment - often legacy systems were built with business objectives in mind that are no longer valid.  We review your applications to determine their fit against current business objectives and strategy.

Technology - not only are we looking at the technology stack, but also the degree of technical debt carried by an application.

At the end of the assessment, we provide a series of portfolio views that let IT and business leaders take actions to optimize and improve their portolio.  See our Application Portfolio Management (APM) offering for more information. These types of assessments typically take 2-12 weeks depending on the size of the application.
